We caught up with Mack Allan, our new Director of Management Consultancy to hear about his first month at MYA. Everything from diving into new projects and building relationships to gaining insight into the unique MYA approach. Mack has already made a strong start. In this candid Q&A, he shares his first impressions, what’s stood out, and where he sees opportunity for continued growth and innovation.
- What are your first impressions of MYA’s culture and values?
MYA immediately strikes me as a business committed to nurturing talent from within. There’s a strong focus on growth in a supportive environment—where less experienced team members are encouraged to develop alongside seasoned professionals. That balance of ambition and care really resonates with me and aligns closely with my own values.
- How has your transition from operational leadership into consultancy evolved over the past month?
It’s definitely been a steep learning curve! One of the biggest shifts has been the depth of scrutiny required in decision-making—especially when evaluating bidders. The level of detail and diligence reflects just how much effort others have already put in. It’s also reminded me how interconnected our industry is—contract caterers, hoteliers, consultants, clients—we all rely on each other for support, trust, and integrity.
- From what you’ve seen so far, how does MYA stand out in the consultancy space?
The level of tailoring MYA delivers is remarkable. There’s no such thing as an “off-the-shelf” solution here. Every approach is crafted specifically for the client’s needs. It may take more time and investment, but the end result is a higher quality outcome—and that’s what sets MYA apart.
- Are there any emerging themes or areas of client focus that feel especially timely or exciting?
The introduction of VAT into Independent Schools has been a major focus recently, and it continues to shape discussions—particularly as we head into the ISBA conference. It’s an important moment to assess how this shift affects commercial dynamics in the sector, especially in terms of risk and reward.
- How do you envisage moving the management consultancy’s strategic direction forward?
There are several exciting paths ahead. Key priorities include exploring new markets, building strategic partnerships with major design brands, reigniting relationships in other sectors, and of course, continuing to strengthen our service to existing clients.
- What’s struck you most about the way the MYA team works together?
The organisation and discipline in communication are impressive. MYA’s “Hub & Spoke” model is supported by structured, action-oriented internal forums. This ensures clarity on progress, encourages accountability, and allows for timely intervention where needed. It creates a strong sense of unity and momentum.
- How have you started to support or collaborate with colleagues across the business?
By getting hands-on from day one. I’ve made it a priority to roll up my sleeves and dive in alongside the team—that’s the best way to learn, contribute, and build relationships quickly.
- What priorities are you setting for the next few months, and how do they reflect MYA’s wider ambitions?
Personally, I’m focused on deepening my understanding of our client projects and playing an active role in planning the next phase of growth. These priorities are fully aligned with MYA’s broader ambitions—and that cohesion is vital to driving progress.
- In what ways do you see your leadership style contributing to the company’s momentum and growth?
MYA is filled with brilliantly creative people—they truly are the heartbeat of the business. My role is to provide the structure, support, and space they need to thrive. I want to enable that creativity to flourish while ensuring we remain focused and aligned.
- Has anything surprised you—either a challenge or something that’s exceeded expectations?
The breadth of services we offer and the geographic spread of our client base has been a standout. It’s both impressive and energising to see the scale of what MYA is delivering.
- If you had to capture your first month at MYA in only three words, what would they be?
Demanding. Educational. Rewarding.
